One of the best kept secrets of Madison is the best donuts you'll find in town. Greenbush is innocuously located on Regent Street right next to Rocky Rococo. The bakery has strange hours during the weekend but on most weekdays it is conveniently open until the early hours of the day, perfect for satisfying that late night studying food craving.

Upon walking in the bakery you are literally smacked in the face by a delicious fresh scent of baked goods. Translation: you can not walk out of that place without buying at least a donut. All of the donuts are baked fresh and there is an assortment of delights from the typical cake and filled donuts to the interesting drumstick-like donuts and giant fritters (feeds at least four!). Essentially: you can't go wrong in your choice. The cake donuts are an absolute delight in my opinion; they are perfectly flavored, dense, and buttery, though the regular donuts are flawless too. My favorites at Greenbush are the blueberry cake donuts, pumpkin cake donuts (seasonal), and the apple fritters.

The only downside to Greenbush is that besides the counter, there isn't much more room in the place so be sure to know where you can go afterward to eat your tasty treats.

*Note from Tossy: Some of the donuts are "vegan" but they do contain whey, so it depends on how strictly vegan you are.

Whey isn't vegan - ever. So I guess it does indeed depend on your definition of vegan. I wouln't call them even "vegan" myself since they contain an always animal sourced ingredient.

Sugar is where I think terms like "vegan" are more appropriate since many times the sugar sources are changing or unknown and you can't know processing details for more commericial items.

Thanks for the info though.
