Two weekends ago, a group of us all made our way over to Rising Sons Deli, a restaurant loved by Tossy. Rising Sons used to be open in University Square but now has moved up and into State Street. The food featured is Thai/Laotian and most of the food is at a nice price of <$9. The most peculiar aspect of Rising Sons is that the owners never fully refurbished the interior, so the restaurant still has much of the old retro memorabilia from its previous owner. Therefore a juxtaposition of retro egg chairs and guitar photo tables with Thai food makes the inside of the restaurant feel more cluttered than it is. Also the elongated restaurant with an odd placement for a bar makes the place feel small. Despite the quirkiness of the restaurant, the food was much better than I expected. I ordered the classic pad thai: a great way to measure how good a thai restaurant is. Other table mates had coconut chicken noodle soup, pad se eui (above), and curry squash. The pad thai was very tasty, although I would have liked it to be less sweet - a common problem with Americanized East/Southeast Asian cuisine. In addition, it was less savory than that I have tried at Sa Bai Thong but much better than what is "made" at Noodles. Also, I liked the array of yummy hot sauces that were on the table to use. Everyone else seemed to enjoy their food. In addition, our service was fabulous. We even got an array of candy when we paid our bill. Rising Sons Deli is a refreshing change from the many European and American restaurants that line the first few blocks of State Street coming from campus. In addition, it's the only Thai restaurant that is within walking distance, if you are ever hungry for Thai. However, if you are looking for extremely delicious Thai food, I would recommend hopping a bus and hitting Sa Bai Thong further west on University.

Tossy really loves Rising Son's. She has been there countless times. She highly recommends the curry squash with tofu. However, she would like to warn any of you vegans/vegetarians out there that not everything on the menu that Rising Son's claims can be made vegetarian or vegan actually can be. Many of these dishes are made with animal broth or oyster sauce. However, the curry squash is one of the few dishes that can be made vegan, and Tossy is sure you will love it, even if you are a carnivorous snow leopard.
